Perfect Doesn't Pay the Bills

Perfect Doesn't Pay the Bills

Perfect doesn't pay the bills. Simple as. | Entry 2 -28 July 2025

Last week was so productive it almost made me forget about this, but rest assured, this post has been loading over the last few days and honestly came to a head just last night.

Remember when it was cool to say “I’m a perfectionist” somewhere between middle and high school? Like when you’d get that group project and every one was wondered why you were so fussed over the little details or having the overall plan laid out on week 1? I’ll be the first to say I bought, sold, and marketed that propaganda for a longtime. It wasn’t until during and post-Covid high school that I really analysed my need for academic validation and perfectionism and chose to put a stop to it once and for all. Or so I thought.

While life certainly isn’t as easy as high school anymore and my tasks have levelled up exponentially (thank God), the same patterns of wanting something to be perfect seem to keep coming up and stunting my growth. Now this perfection is both similar and different to my previous one: while I made sure to double-cross every “t” and double-dot every “I” back then, I still have that desire now when building different aspects of this business. From making the website to finalising Instagram campaigns, I recognise parts of that perfectionism coming out.

I want a Louis Vuitton level website for brand that’s more or less still in the garage. Realistically (and unfortunately for this bad practice of mine), there are going to be kinks.

Another level of the perfection comes from making things look really good - whether it’s the user interface, the branding, the content, whatever it is I’m striving to make the perfect thing. Again, serious reality check incoming, it’s just not possible. Wanting this ends up stunting my growth through indecision, lack of time, or good old fashioned procrastination.

All that to say, perfection, in all its unachievable glory, has had its little chokehold on me for far too long and I’m here to document my decision to change it around. With a little help from DonYe’s article last week and a lovely chat with my Mum (the rumours are true: parents know best I’m afraid), not only did I realise that perfection had been stunting my growth, I also realised it will quite literally never pay the bills.

So many people talk about just post the content but I guess maybe I’m really getting it now (?!). As a social media manager and digital marketer, I say those words all the time but I guess this coach was struggling to play. I’ve decided to spend the next few days making, creating, and taking content and just posting it. No thoughts, no strategy, no hashtags.

Just the things I want to see on my personal pages created by me with my unique touch.

Where does this come into play in the grand scheme of the business? Social media is fickle. One week the algorithm loves this and the next week it hates it. Life, however, stays within the same construct, without minute algorithmic changes or shadow ban nonsense. Who we create for and market to are out there searching for bags we have for the very same reasons we created them. Our bags are apart of our lives, and yours are too. Marketing that doesn’t have to be as strategic as perfectly placed SEO keywords or progressively tracked and applied KPI’s. Knowing your audience? Creating for your community? That’s the goal.

It’s time to get my eyes set on the prize.

Everything is and will turn out as it should.
