Starting with the Small Things | Entry 1 - 16 July 2025
So I watched a podcast yesterday called “How to Steward a New Beginning” and, not to be dramatic but, it changed me. My mindset going into this next season of my life was how it’s always been: Type A.
→ Organising my schedule, trying to plan ahead, enforcing good habits now for the future, considering all my options, excited about the new and reflecting on the old/current.
Essentially? Planning too far ahead into the unknown, out of my control future.
Time is a funny thing. I wouldn’t say I had a lot of it when I started this, but I certainly didn’t know how much time would be taken away, shifted, and changed over the last six to eight months.
The last time I was consistent on here, I was focused on styling and neuropsychology in fashion. While the core of that has remained, the ebbs and flows of these months have refined my interests and forced me forward. Taking my interest in styling and love for it, I would like to start filming and documenting more of my outfits. As I look to launch and release one of my most important projects to date, my goals are styling, accessorising, and creating in an authentic way, while sharing things intentionally.
As I’ve had time to sit back and reflect, pouring into myself and my faith has allowed my eyes to be opened clearly. I realised my creative process and work habits have been holding me back from creating anything “imperfect,” from fear that it won’t be received well. The fact of the matter is: we all start somewhere and oftentimes, not only is it imperfect, it’s small.
There is beauty and power in the small things. The time I struggled to find in order to pour into this community has been there, just hidden behind distractions and lessons. The lessons have led to the passion and pace I’m going at now, working to make things sustainable with a new understanding and grace. Running alongside these is the reassurance that this is where I’m meant to be, what I’m meant to be doing, in this season (at the very least), and simply: Rome wasn’t built in a day.
That being said, my focus can shift from the GPS to the driver’s seat, remaining present and looking out at the immediate view. The podcast reminded me that in a chronically online society, our big achievements and highlight reels are more often than not what’s on display, while our smaller, less glamorous beginnings are brushed aside and/or hidden away. We’ve glorified the destination, more than the journey.
So currently, this is my ode to the small things and small beginnings. My “Diary of a CMO:” The Chief Marketing Officer for my aunt & I’s bag brand AkellOmolo. This is:
-
A way to keep me accountable.
-
A way to be transparent: keep me moving forward, even in the small, slow, hard, mundane, confusing, and/or frustrating.
-
A way to keep me looking towards the goals I’ve set out to achieve - because joy is inevitable alongside the sorrow.
-
A way to remind me who and what I’m doing this for.
-
A reminder that small is sexy! Or at the very least, just as sexy as the glamorous end results.
Resets are vital. Idolising them and their comfort can create complacency and disobedience to your calling.
So start small → fail or succeed → analyse your progress → apply it.
Everything is and will turn out as it should.
